アフガニスタン出身の女性ジャーナリスト、ナジーバ・ヌーリが監督を務め、幼少時に教育の機会を奪われ13歳で結婚させられた母ハワにカメラを向けたドキュメンタリー。 アフガニスタンの首都カーブルで、30歳上の認知症の夫を世話しながら暮らすハワ。結婚を強いられたときハワはまだ13歳で、父は幼い彼女を教育から遠ざけ、母は出産について何も助言してくれなかった。6人の子を産んだ彼女は、娘たちが同じ道に進まぬよう教育の機会を与え、次女ナジーバはジャーナリストとして自立した生活を送っている。母の味方になることを決意したナジーバは彼女にカメラを向け、夫の愚痴や秘密の恋、そして“やってみたかったこと”について話を聞く。ハワは民族手芸の商売と読み書きの学習を始めるが、ささやかな夢が動き出した矢先、長女の元夫と暮らす孫娘ザハラーが支配的な父のもとから逃れてくる。孫娘を引き取り一緒に読み書きを学ぶハワだったが、タリバンによる襲撃と占領は日ごとに進み、ザハラーと彼女を匿う家族にも命の危険が迫る。2021年8月にタリバンが復権すると、報道の自由を封殺する動きが強まり、ナジーバは兄アリーにカメラを託して母国を後にする。 山形国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭2025にて市民賞を受賞したほか、世界各地の映画祭で多数の賞を受賞した。
A documentary directed by Najiba Nouri, an Afghan female journalist, who turns the camera on her mother Hawa, who was denied education as a child and forced into marriage at age 13. Hawa lives in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, caring for her husband, who is 30 years older and has dementia. Hawa was only 13 when she was forced into marriage; her father kept her from education, and her mother gave her no advice about childbirth. After giving birth to six children, she ensured her daughters received education so they wouldn't follow the same path. Her second daughter, Najiba, lives independently as a journalist. Determined to support her mother, Najiba points the camera at her and listens to her complaints about her husband, secret love, and 'things she wanted to do.' Hawa starts a folk craft business and learns to read and write, but just as her modest dreams begin to take shape, her granddaughter Zahra, who lives with her eldest daughter's ex-husband, flees from her domineering father. Hawa takes in her granddaughter and learns to read and write with her, but Taliban attacks and occupation advance daily, putting Zahra and the family sheltering her in mortal danger. When the Taliban regained power in August 2021, moves to suppress press freedom intensified, and Najiba entrusted the camera to her brother Ali and left her homeland. The film won the Citizens' Prize at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2025 and numerous awards at film festivals worldwide.
