オルタナティブロック全盛の1990年代半ばに活動を開始し、唯一無二の音楽性で多くの人々から愛されたアメリカのアーティスト「スパークルホース」の中心人物マーク・リンカスの謎めいた生涯と音楽に迫ったドキュメンタリー。 1995年にデビューアルバム「Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot」をリリースし、その独創的なサウンドで欧米を中心に高く評価されたスパークルホース。レディオヘッドやR.E.M.のオープニングアクトにも抜てきされ注目を集めたが、レディオヘッドとのヨーロッパツアー中、マーク・リンカスがアルコールと薬物の過剰摂取により生死の境をさまよう事態に陥ってしまう。一命はとりとめたものの、その後遺症はマークの人生に大きな影響を及ぼし、6枚目のアルバム制作中の2010年に彼は自ら命を絶った。 本作は、マーク・リンカス本人の死の直前に収録されたインタビューと、生前に親交のあったミュージシャンたちや映画監督デビッド・リンチらの証言を通して、その実存と音楽をひも解いていく。
This documentary explores the enigmatic life and music of Mark Linkous, the central figure of the American act Sparklehorse, who emerged during the mid-1990s alternative rock boom and earned a devoted following for his singular musicality. Sparklehorse released their debut album, *Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot*, in 1995, garnering critical acclaim across the West for its inventive sound. The band gained further prominence as the opening act for Radiohead and R.E.M., but during a European tour with Radiohead, Linkous suffered a near-fatal alcohol and drug overdose. Though he survived, the lasting effects of the incident cast a long shadow over his life, and in 2010, while working on his sixth album, he took his own life. Through interviews recorded shortly before his death and testimonies from fellow musicians and filmmaker David Lynch, this film unravels the reality of Linkous’s existence and his music.
