石川英輔の小説「SF西遊記」が原案で、デザインは松本零士が手掛けた。枯渇したギャラクシーエナジーを回復するためオーロラ姫一行は銀河の中心「大王星」へ向かう。お供はクーゴ、ハッカ、ジョーゴの3人のサイボーグ。銀角のひょうたんはブラックホールに、筋斗雲は小型戦闘機に翻案され、荒くれ者のクーゴは姫に見放されて追放される。シリーズ後半に登場するベラミスは美形キャラとして人気を博した。全64話。継続して、「SF西遊記 スタージンガーⅡ」全9話が放送された。
Based on Eisuke Ishikawa's novel 'SF Saiyuki,' with designs by Leiji Matsumoto. To restore the depleted Galaxy Energy, Princess Aurora and her party head to 'Daiōsei' at the center of the galaxy. Her companions are three cyborgs: Kūgo, Hakka, and Jōgo. Ginkaku's gourd is adapted into a black hole, the kintoun cloud into a small fighter craft, and the rough-and-tumble Kūgo is abandoned and banished by the princess. Bellamis, appearing in the latter half of the series, gained popularity as a handsome character. 64 episodes total. Subsequently, 'SF Saiyuki Starzinger II' aired for 9 episodes.
