歌舞伎の舞台を映画館でデジタル上映する「シネマ歌舞伎」シリーズ第28弾。1994年に十八世中村勘三郎らによって、渋谷シアターコクーンでスタートした「渋谷・コクーン歌舞伎」。その第1回目の演目でもある鶴屋南北の「東海道四谷怪談」を串田和美の新たな演出、構成により上演された、2016年6月「コクーン歌舞伎」第15弾の舞台を収録。己の欲に忠実に生きる伊右衛門、直助権兵衛、男たちの刹那。男たちに翻弄されるお袖、お岩、女たちの哀しさ。「四谷怪談」が持つ本能と欲の物語は現代にも通じるという串田流解釈による「四谷怪談」が芝居小屋ならではの臨場感を重視した映像で再現される。伊右衛門役を中村獅童、直助権兵衛役を中村勘九郎、お袖を中村七之助、お岩役を中村扇雀がそれぞれ演じ、片岡亀蔵、笹野高史ら「コクーン歌舞伎」常連俳優に加え、大森博史、バレエダンサーの首藤康之など、歌舞伎としては異色のキャストも出演。
The 28th installment in the "Cinema Kabuki" series, which digitally screens kabuki stage performances in movie theaters. This recording captures the June 2016 performance of the 15th "Cocoon Kabuki," featuring Tsuruya Nanboku's "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" in a new direction and composition by Kushida Kazumi. The production originated in 1994 at Shibuya's Theater Cocoon, led by Nakamura Kanzaburo XVIII, and this was the first program in that series. Iemon, who lives faithfully to his own desires; Naosuke Gonbei; the fleeting moments of men. Osode and Oiwa, toyed with by men; the sorrow of women. Kushida's interpretation of "Yotsuya Kaidan" as a story of instinct and desire that still resonates today is recreated with footage emphasizing the unique sense of presence of a live theater. Nakamura Shido plays Iemon, Nakamura Kankuro plays Naosuke Gonbei, Nakamura Shichinosuke plays Osode, and Nakamura Senjaku plays Oiwa. Along with regular "Cocoon Kabuki" actors like Kataoka Kamezo and Sasano Takashi, the cast also features unconventional choices for kabuki, including Omori Hiroshi and ballet dancer Shuto Yasuyuki.
