「マルタの鷹」「アフリカの女王」の巨匠ジョン・ヒューストンが、19世紀末のフランスの画家ロートレックの短い生涯を描いた伝記映画。 19世紀末のパリ、モンマルトル。画家のアンリ・ド・トゥールーズ＝ロートレックは、屋根に飾られた赤い風車がシンボルのキャバレー「ムーラン・ルージュ」に毎晩のように通い、踊り子や酔客たちの姿を写生する日々を送っている。名門の家に生まれた彼は、近親結婚の弊害や幼少期の事故により両脚の成長が止まっており、窮屈な家を出てモンマルトルに暮らしながら、そこの風物を描くことに生きがいを見いだしていた。ある夜、娼婦マリーを助けたアンリは彼女と同棲するようになるが、ふたりの関係は次第に破綻していく。 ピエール・ラ・ミュールによるロートレックの伝記小説「ムーラン・ルージュ」を原作に、「イグアナの夜」「殺人者」のアンソニー・ベイラーとヒューストン監督が共同で脚本を担当。「ケイン号の叛乱」のホセ・ファーラーが主演を務め、ロートレックとその父を1人2役で演じた。1953年・第25回アカデミー賞で美術賞と衣装デザイン賞を受賞。

A biographical film by master filmmaker John Huston, known for 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'The African Queen,' depicting the short life of the late 19th-century French painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Paris, Montmartre, at the end of the 19th century. The painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec frequents the cabaret 'Moulin Rouge,' symbolized by the red windmill on its roof, spending his days sketching the dancers and drunk patrons. Born into an aristocratic family, his leg growth stopped due to the effects of consanguineous marriage and a childhood accident. He finds purpose in life by leaving his stifling home to live in Montmartre and painting its scenes. One night, Henri helps a prostitute named Marie and begins living with her, but their relationship gradually falls apart. Based on the biographical novel 'Moulin Rouge' by Pierre La Mure, the screenplay was co-written by Huston and Anthony Veiller, known for 'The Night of the Iguana' and 'The Killers.' José Ferrer, of 'The Caine Mutiny,' stars, playing both Toulouse-Lautrec and his father in a dual role. The film won the Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design at the 25th Academy Awards in 1953.
