The fourth production of the 2025–26 season of "MET Live Viewing," which brings the latest performances from New York’s Metropolitan Opera to movie theaters. This installment features "Andrea Chénier," an opera that uses the dynamic music of Verismo (realism) to depict the turmoil between a poet who met his end at the guillotine during the French Revolution, the countess who was his soulmate, and the revolutionary who loved her (scheduled to be recorded from the performance on December 13, 2025). Paris, on the eve of the French Revolution. At the estate of the Count de Coigny, the servant Gérard harbors a growing resentment toward the establishment while secretly pining for the daughter of the house, Maddalena. At a party one evening, a guest named Andrea Chénier improvises a poem about love, striking a chord with both Maddalena and Gérard. Five years later, Gérard has risen to become a high-ranking official in the revolutionary government, yet he still cannot forget Maddalena. Now fallen from grace, Maddalena is reunited with Chénier, who has been branded an enemy of the revolution. Gérard arrests Chénier and exposes his raw desire for Maddalena, but by the time he realizes the depth of his own folly, Chénier has already been sentenced to death.
