ニューヨークのメトロポリタン歌劇場（MET）で上演される最新オペラ公演を映画館で上映する人気企画「METライブビューイング」2018～19シーズンの第5作。ベルディの傑作オペラを19世紀から18世紀に舞台を移し、METの新音楽監督ヤニック・ネゼ＝セガンによる指揮のもと、スター歌手ディアナ・ダムラウとフアン・ディエゴ・フローレスが共演する「椿姫」（2018年12月15日上演）を収録。18世紀パリ。社交界でもてはやされ享楽的な生活を続けていた高給娼婦ビオレッタは、肺病を患ってしまう。ビオレッタに憧れる田舎出身のブルジョワ青年アルフレードは、彼女に愛を告白し一緒に暮らそうと申し出る。娼婦の暮らしを捨て、パリ郊外でアルフレードと幸せな日々を送るビオレッタだったが、アルフレードの父ジェルモンの登場により状況は一変。ジェルモンはアルフレードの妹が結婚するから身を引いてほしいとビオレッタに迫る。
The fifth installment of the popular 'MET Live in HD' series for the 2018-19 season, which screens the latest opera performances from New York's Metropolitan Opera in cinemas. This recording captures Verdi's masterpiece opera, relocated from the 19th century to the 18th, conducted by the MET's new music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, featuring star singers Diana Damrau and Juan Diego Flórez in 'La Traviata' (performed December 15, 2018). In 18th-century Paris, Violetta, a high-paid courtesan celebrated in high society and living a hedonistic life, falls ill with consumption. Alfredo, a bourgeois young man from the countryside who admires Violetta, confesses his love and proposes they live together. Violetta abandons her life as a courtesan and enjoys happy days with Alfredo in the Paris suburbs, but her situation changes drastically when Alfredo's father, Germont, appears. Germont pressures Violetta to leave Alfredo because his daughter is getting married.
