江戸の浮世絵技術を現代に受け継ぐ「アダチ版画研究所」で、現代アーティストの作品を版画にするプロジェクトに挑む職人たちの仕事を追ったドキュメンタリー。 江戸時代に隆盛を極め、ゴッホなど印象派の画家たちにも多大な影響を与えた浮世絵。1928年創業のアダチ版画研究所は浮世絵版画の技術を現代に継承し、これまで版元として江戸時代の名作の数々を復刻し国内外に届けてきた。近年、同研究所は、草間彌生、ロッカクアヤコ、ニック・ウォーカー、アントニー・ゴームリーら世界的に活躍する38名のアーティストを絵師に迎え、新たな現代の浮世絵を創作するプロジェクトに取り組んでいる。約5年かけて86作品を制作し、2025年春に東京国立博物館で開催される「浮世絵現代」展での発表を目指す。彫師と摺師たちは、古典的な浮世絵とは異なる世界観と多様な表現にたじろぎ、絵師の鋭い指摘に苦悩しながらも、職人としての矜持から粘り強く原画の美をすくいあげ、さらなる高みを求めて試行錯誤していく。 監督は「≒草間彌生 わたし大好き」「氷の花火 山口小夜子」の松本貴子。
A documentary following the craftsmen at the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, who carry on Edo-period ukiyo-e techniques into the modern era, as they take on a project to transform works by contemporary artists into woodblock prints. Ukiyo-e flourished in the Edo period and greatly influenced Impressionist painters like Van Gogh. Founded in 1928, the Adachi Institute has preserved ukiyo-e print techniques, reproducing classic Edo masterpieces as a publisher and delivering them both domestically and internationally. In recent years, the institute has undertaken a project to create new contemporary ukiyo-e by inviting 38 globally active artists—including Yayoi Kusama, Ayako Rokkaku, Nick Walker, and Antony Gormley—as painters. Over about five years, they produce 86 works, aiming for presentation at the "Ukiyo-e Modern" exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum in spring 2025. The carvers and printers, daunted by worldviews and diverse expressions different from classical ukiyo-e, struggle under the artists' sharp critiques yet, driven by craftsman pride, tenaciously draw out the beauty of the original art, repeatedly experimenting in pursuit of higher heights.
