イギリスの女性作家ジェーン・オースティンが1811年に発表した小説「分別と多感」を、舞台を現代の南インドに移して映画化した恋愛ドラマ。「響け！情熱のムリダンガム」の監督ラージーブ・メーナンと音楽のA・R・ラフマーンのコンビが2000年に手がけた。 南インド・タミルナードゥ州の由緒ある名家。慎ましく聡明な姉ソウミャは学校の校長を務め、詩と南インド古典音楽を愛する奔放な妹ミーナクシは夢見るように日々を過ごしていた。しかし祖父の死をきっかけに屋敷は遠縁の手に渡り、母と娘たちは大都会チェンナイで新たな生活を始めることになる。妹の前には詩を愛する若き実業家と、内戦で片足を失い花を育てて生きる元軍人が現れ、姉の前には映画監督を志す男が現れる。それぞれの恋と仕事のなかで、姉妹は自分の人生を一つずつ見つけていく。 姉ソウミャを「その名にちなんで」「ライフ・オブ・パイ トラと漂流した227日」で知られるタブー、妹ミーナクシを「ロボット」のアイシュワリヤー・ラーイ・バッチャンが演じ、アジット・クマール、マンムーティ、アッバースが共演。
A romantic drama adapting Jane Austen's 1811 novel 'Sense and Sensibility,' relocated to modern-day South India. Directed by Rajiv Menon and featuring music by A. R. Rahman, the duo behind 'Mridangam: The Beat of Passion,' this film was released in 2000. In a prestigious family in Tamil Nadu, South India, the reserved and intelligent elder sister Sowmya works as a school principal, while her free-spirited younger sister Meenakshi, who loves poetry and South Indian classical music, lives in a dreamy haze. After their grandfather's death, the family estate passes to a distant relative, forcing the mother and daughters to start a new life in the bustling city of Chennai. Meenakshi meets a young businessman who loves poetry and a former soldier who lost a leg in war and now grows flowers, while Sowmya encounters a man aspiring to be a film director. Through their respective loves and careers, the sisters gradually discover their own paths in life. Tabu, known for 'The Namesake' and 'Life of Pi,' plays Sowmya; Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, known for 'Robot,' plays Meenakshi; and Ajith Kumar, Mammootty, and Abbas co-star.
