ビートルズがやって来た1965年夏のニューヨークを舞台に、当時のニューヨークとそこにいた人々を多様な視点で描いたドキュメンタリー。 1965年8月13日、ビートルズの4人は音楽史上初のスタジアムコンサートに出演するためニューヨークに降り立った。4人の姿を求めて大勢の熱狂的ファンがマンハッタンの街を駆けめぐる一方、コンサート会場となるシェイ・スタジアムのすぐ隣では楽天的な未来にあふれた万博が開かれ、西海岸では大規模な人種暴動が起こっていた。ニューヨークで最初にビートルズの曲を放送したラジオDJの息子で、作家を目指す17歳の青年ジェフリーは、ビートルズを愛する少女と出会い、その夏の数日間をともに過ごす。 「ニコラエ・チャウシェスクの自伝」で知られるルーマニアの巨匠アンドレイ・ウジカが10年以上の歳月をかけて制作。ニュース番組や個人の8ミリフィルムから抜粋したアーカイブ素材で構成した映像に、フランス人アーティストのヤン・ケビによるアニメーション、主人公の詩人ジェフリー・オブライエンとヒロインのモデルとなったジュディス・クリステンの個人的な文章、ウジカ監督自身が1972年に書いた詩を用いた声を加え、歴史から消え去ってしまう、はかなくも忘れがたい瞬間を想像力豊かによみがえらせた。
A documentary set in New York City during the summer of 1965 when the Beatles arrived, depicting the city and its people from diverse perspectives. On August 13, 1965, the four Beatles landed in New York to perform the first stadium concert in music history. While hordes of ecstatic fans raced through the streets of Manhattan to catch a glimpse of them, a world's fair full of optimistic futures was taking place right next to the concert venue, Shea Stadium, and large-scale race riots were erupting on the West Coast. Jeffrey, a 17-year-old aspiring writer and son of the radio DJ who first played Beatles songs in New York, meets a girl who loves the Beatles and spends a few days of that summer with her. Directed by Romanian master Andrei Ujică, known for "The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceaușescu," who spent over a decade making this film. Composed of archival footage from news programs and personal 8mm films, it incorporates animation by French artist Yan Kébé, personal writings from protagonist poet Jeffrey O'Brien and Judith Christen (the model for the heroine), and voiceover using a poem Ujică himself wrote in 1972, imaginatively reviving fleeting, unforgettable moments that would otherwise fade from history.
