The theater troupe Zenshinza, founded in 1931, eventually expanded into film. In 1934, they planned a chain drama adaptation of Sakae Kubo's Shinsengumi, but it was never realized. Later, while partnering with Nikkatsu and P.C.L. to produce a string of masterpieces, their ninth film was Shinsengumi (1937), and planned in parallel was a chain drama performance of Shinsengumi at the Shimbashi Embujo. This screening presents a print made in 2004 from flammable positive film for chain drama use that had been donated to the museum in 2004 from Zenshinza's former collection, which was converted to non-flammable stock that same year. It is the first public screening since its original run at the Embujo.
