Count Basie, who brought the blues into jazz and sparked a rhythm revolution, built the golden age of swing jazz and was hailed as the 'King of Swing'. In Japan, he has captivated many jazz fans for years, and his music remains highly popular in the repertoires of student big bands and wind ensembles. This film focuses not only on his brilliant public career but also on his little-known private life, which Basie himself rarely discussed. The film's production team discovered numerous home movies shot by his family, vast photo albums, letters, and other valuable materials. It reveals his family love for his daughter Diane, who was born with cerebral palsy, and his wife Catherine, who supported the African American civil rights movement from its early days and interacted with Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife. The film also features members of the still-active Basie Orchestra and friends like Quincy Jones and Annie Ross. Through their portrayals of Basie and valuable archival materials, including collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, his life's journey and the turbulent social history of 20th-century America are brought into sharp relief.
