広島県出身の庭田杏珠監督が、高校時代から9年間続けてきた「記憶の解凍」の取り組みを、ドキュメンタリーとアニメーションで表現した作品。 原爆投下前後の日常をとらえたモノクロ写真を、戦争体験者との対話やAI技術などを組み合わせてカラー化することで“記憶の色”を再現する「記憶の解凍」。カラー化した写真をもとに行う対話により、凍りついていた悲しい記憶が、戦前の幸せな日常の記憶へと変化していく。広島平和記念公園がある地域にかつて存在した繁華街・中島本町の元住民たちなど、国内外の30人以上と対話した記録の中から、貴重な“語り”を伝えていく。アニメーションパートでは、失われた日常の色を取り戻すべくタイムマシーンで時空を超えて旅をする主人公アンジーの姿を描き出す。 アニメーションパートは庭田監督がイラストを描き、アニメーション映画「この世界の片隅に」の片渕須直監督による監修のもと、映像作家・野村健太らが制作に参加。作曲家・ピアニストのはらかなこが音楽を手がけ、広島平和記念資料館や平和記念公園を巡り、被爆者と対話して、主題歌「平和色の写真」を作曲。庭田監督が歌詞を書き、被爆体験を伝承する活動に取り組むシンガーソングライターのHIPPYが歌唱を担当。
A film by director Anju Niwata from Hiroshima Prefecture, expressing her nine-year project "Memory Thawing" through documentary and animation. "Memory Thawing" recreates the "colors of memory" by colorizing black-and-white photos capturing daily life before and after the atomic bombing, combining dialogue with war survivors and AI technology. Through conversations based on the colorized photos, frozen sad memories transform into memories of happy pre-war daily life. The film conveys precious "narratives" from records of dialogues with over 30 people in Japan and abroad, including former residents of Nakajima-honmachi, a once-thriving entertainment district in the area now home to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The animation part depicts the protagonist Anji, who travels through time in a time machine to restore the colors of a lost everyday life. Director Niwata drew the illustrations for the animation part, which was produced under the supervision of Sunao Katabuchi, director of the animated film "In This Corner of the World," with participation from video artist Kenta Nomura and others. Composer and pianist Kanako Hara handled the music, composing the theme song "Heiwa Iro no Shashin" after visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park and speaking with atomic bomb survivors. Director Niwata wrote the lyrics, and HIPPY, a singer-songwriter active in passing down the atomic bomb experience, performed the song.
