台湾各地に存在する「日本人の神様」の謎を追ったドキュメンタリー。 かつて日本が植民地として統治していた台湾には、軍服を着た日本人が神様として祀られている場所が50カ所以上もあるという。文化人類学者の藤野陽平と記録映像作家の遠藤協が、台湾各地の「日本神（にほんがみ）」を訪ね歩く旅を、コロナ禍を挟んで足かけ6年にわたって記録。謎をたどっていくうちに、日本神がそれぞれひとりの人間として確かに存在した事実が明らかになり、彼らの数奇な運命と、台湾の民間信仰のあり方、そして日本が台湾に残してきた戦争の痕跡が浮かび上がる。異国の地でさまよい死後の世界を生きる日本人の魂と、その魂を慰撫し神として祀る台湾の人々、神となった先祖と出会いなおす日本の子孫たちの姿を通し、死者を悼み弔う心が生んだ、日本と台湾の知られざる交流を描き出す。 監督は民俗学的なモチーフを得意とし、「廻り神楽」で第73回毎日映画コンクールドキュメンタリー映画賞を受賞した遠藤協。音楽ユニット「馬喰町バンド」のメンバーで美術家としても活動する武徹太郎が音楽とアニメーションを手がけた。

A documentary exploring the mystery of "Japanese gods" found across Taiwan. In Taiwan, once a Japanese colony, there are over fifty locations where Japanese men in military uniforms are enshrined as deities. Cultural anthropologist Yohei Fujino and documentary filmmaker Kyo Endo spent six years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling across Taiwan to visit these "Japanese gods." As they trace the mystery, the fact that each Japanese god truly existed as an individual human being comes to light, revealing their extraordinary fates, the nature of Taiwanese folk beliefs, and the lingering traces of war Japan left in Taiwan. Through the souls of Japanese people wandering in a foreign land after death, the Taiwanese who soothe these souls and enshrine them as gods, and the Japanese descendants who reconnect with their deified ancestors, the film portrays an unknown exchange between Japan and Taiwan born from the heart of mourning and honoring the dead. Directed by Kyo Endo, who specializes in folkloric motifs and won the 73rd Mainichi Film Award for Best Documentary for "Meguri Kagura." Music and animation are by Tetsutaro Take, a member of the music unit "Bakurocho Band" who also works as an artist.
