「白鯨」などで知られるハーマン・メルビルの小説「ビリー・バッド」を下敷きに、フランスの名匠クレール・ドゥニが手がけた作品で、青くまばゆいアフリカの海岸を背景に、フランスの外国人部隊と、それを率いる指揮官の送る日々を描いたドラマ。 フランス、マルセイユの自宅で回想録を執筆しているガルー。かつて外国人部隊の上級曹長だった彼は、アフリカのジブチに駐留していた。暑く乾いた土地で過ごすなか、いつしかガルーは上官であるフォレスティエの多くの資質に対し、羨ましい思いを抱くようになる。ある時、部隊にサンタンという新兵がやってくる。社交的な性格でたちまち人気者になったサンタンに対し、ガルーは嫉妬や羨望を抱き、いつしかサンタンを破滅させたいと願うようになる。 主演は「汚れた血」「ポンヌフの恋人」などのレオス・カラックス作品の常連として知られるドニ・ラバン。日本では長らく未公開だったが、2024年に4Kレストア版で劇場初公開。
A film by French master Claire Denis, based on Herman Melville's novel "Billy Budd" (known for "Moby-Dick"), depicting the daily lives of the French Foreign Legion and the commander leading them against the backdrop of the blue, dazzling African coast. Galoup is writing his memoirs at his home in Marseille, France. A former senior sergeant in the Foreign Legion, he was stationed in Djibouti, Africa. While spending time in the hot, dry land, Galoup gradually becomes envious of the many qualities of his superior officer, Forestier. One day, a new recruit named Sentain arrives at the unit. Galoup feels jealousy and envy towards Sentain, who quickly becomes popular due to his sociable personality, and eventually wishes to destroy him. Starring Denis Lavant, known as a regular in Leos Carax's works such as "Bad Blood" and "The Lovers on the Pont Neuf." Long unreleased in Japan, it received its first theatrical release in 2024 in a 4K restored version.
