原作は赤塚不二夫。全90話で、第78話からはカラー放送となった。田島実がキャラクターデザインを担当し、高畑勲が最終話を含む9話で演出を手掛けている。下町の人情劇らしい趣を湛えながら、赤塚節全開の破天荒なギャグワールドが繰り広げられる。強烈な個性を放つキャラクターたちを、原作の持ち味そのままに演じた声優たちの貢献も大きい。
Original work by Fujio Akatsuka. 90 episodes total, with color broadcasting beginning from episode 78. Minoru Tajima handled character designs, and Isao Takahata directed 9 episodes including the finale. While carrying the charm of a working-class neighborhood human drama, it unfolds Akatsuka's signature style of unbridled, outrageous gag comedy. The voice actors, who performed the intensely distinctive characters true to the original's flavor, also contributed greatly.
