Director Takuya Uchiyama, who swept newcomer awards at film festivals with "Sasaki, In, My Mind" and continued with "Young Strangers," consistently gazing at the youth of young people resisting reality and trying to grasp something, leaving a vivid impression on the film world, releases this passionate work—an autobiographical film set in his hometown of Niigata in winter, telling the story of a boy searching for a place to belong and his identity. Playing the adolescent protagonist Daichi is Takumi Kitamura. He brilliantly embodies the quiet anger toward his father who left him and his mother, and the heart wavering between love and hatred—contradictory emotions—toward his mother who raised him single-handedly. As his mother Aki, Rie Miyazawa gives her all to portray a mother whose innocent nature creates a life that instills loneliness in Daichi, yet whose every detail reveals a certain tenderness toward her son. And as his father Ohara, Masatoshi Nagase, with full maturity, shows a man who transforms from a tyrannical figure into one living out a sorrowful remaining life. Also, as the young Daichi, Tsukasa Enomoto, Anji Kato, and Hazuki Akimoto each express the loneliness, love, and life force swirling deep in his heart with innocent yet powerful gazes, driving the entire story forward. Daichi, a boy living in a town along the Sea of Japan, stopped speaking due to the influence of his father, who was like a tyrant during his early childhood. He now lives with his mother Aki, but Aki, forced to make a living through night work, rarely comes home, and their life is hard. Eventually they move in with his aunt, but he has no place anywhere, and spending time alone, he grew introverted. Daichi decides to visit his old home in search of his father's whereabouts. From this point on, his fate is greatly shaken——— Poverty with no emotional anchor, small salvation amid the loneliness of living so as not to be found by anyone, complicated feelings toward his mother. Daichi seems to live as if being swept along, yet he never stops walking. The 20 years until he grasps a faint light and comes to know a breathtaking, immense love are depicted through a perspective rooted in realism, following the boy's figure throughout.
