東映動画の第1作は、「絵が動く」原初的な喜びにあふれた珠玉の短篇『こねこのらくがき』。続篇の『こねこのスタジオ』から『もぐらのモトロ』に至るまで、森康二の作画が命を吹き込んだ動物たちは格別の愛らしさを備えており、東映動画が得意とする動物キャラクターの表現が、この時点ですでに洗練されていたことが見て取れる。TVアニメ制作が始まるまで、短篇は若手が抜擢される貴重な場となり、白川大作や池田宏が演出デビューを果たしている。
Toei Dōga's first work was the gem of a short film "Koneko no Rakugaki," brimming with the primal joy of "pictures moving." From its sequel "Koneko no Studio" through "Mogura no Motoro," the animals brought to life by Mori Yasuji's animation possess a special charm, and it is clear that the expression of animal characters, a Toei Dōga specialty, was already refined at this early stage. Until TV animation production began, these shorts served as a valuable platform for young talent, with Shirakawa Daisaku and Ikeda Hiroshi making their directorial debuts.
