スウィングジャズの黄金時代を築いたアメリカのジャズピアニスト、カウント・ベイシーの人生と音楽に迫ったドキュメンタリー。 20代でジャズピアニストとして活動を始めたカウント・ベイシーは、仕事で訪れたミズーリ州カンザスシティで多くの一流ミュージシャンと出会い、1928年にブルー・デヴィルズに加入。さらにベニー・モーテン楽団でも研鑽を積んだ後、自らの名を冠したベイシー楽団を結成する。ジャズとブルースを融合させ、リズムに革命をもたらした彼は「キング・オブ・スウィング」と称され、日本でも世代を超えて多くのジャズファンや演奏家から愛され続けている。 本作では、表舞台での華々しい活躍のみならず、これまでベイシー自身があまり語ってこなかったプライベートにも焦点を当てる。家族が撮影したホームビデオや写真アルバム、手紙などの貴重な資料を通して、脳性麻痺の障がいを持って生まれた娘ダイアンや、アフリカ系アメリカ人の人権啓蒙運動を支援した妻キャサリンへの家族愛が明らかになる。さらに、現在も活動を続けるベイシー楽団のメンバーや、クインシー・ジョーンズ、アニー・ロスら友人たちも登場し、彼らが語るベイシー像や数々のアーカイブ資料を通し、その足跡と20世紀アメリカの激動の社会史を浮かび上がらせていく。監督は「ルーツ・ロック・レゲエ」など数多くの音楽ドキュメンタリーを手がけてきたイギリス出身のジェレミー・マー。
A documentary exploring the life and music of Count Basie, the American jazz pianist who built the golden age of swing jazz. Starting his career as a jazz pianist in his twenties, Count Basie met many top musicians in Kansas City, Missouri, joined the Blue Devils in 1928, and later honed his skills with the Bennie Moten Orchestra before forming his own Basie Orchestra. Fusing jazz and blues and revolutionizing rhythm, he was hailed as the 'King of Swing' and remains beloved by jazz fans and musicians across generations in Japan. The film focuses not only on his public triumphs but also on his private life, which Basie rarely discussed. Through home videos, photo albums, and letters from his family, it reveals his love for his daughter Diane, born with cerebral palsy, and his wife Catherine, who supported the African American civil rights movement. Featuring interviews with current Basie Orchestra members, friends like Quincy Jones and Annie Ross, and archival materials, the documentary traces his legacy and the turbulent social history of 20th-century America. Directed by British filmmaker Jeremy Marre, known for many music documentaries including 'Roots Rock Reggae.'
