パンク／ニューウェイヴ発祥の地として知られるニューヨークの伝説的ライブハウス「CBGB」の誕生を描いた音楽伝記ドラマ。 1970年代、ニューヨーク。相次ぐ店の失敗と離婚が重なり人生のどん底にいたヒリー・クリスタルは、再起をかけて小さなカントリーバー「CBGB」を開業する。ステージも配線も水回りもすべて手作業のDIYでつくりあげたものの、客は一向に入らず、閑古鳥の鳴く日々が続いていた。そんなある日、無名のロックバンド・テレヴィジョンが店に現れ、ヒリーは“オリジナル曲のみ演奏すること”を条件に彼らを出演させる。これをきっかけに、トーキング・ヘッズ、パティ・スミス、ラモーンズ、ブロンディら無名の若者たちが店に集まるようになる。小さなバーは、表現の場を失っていた彼らが自分の声を見つける実験場として機能しはじめ、やがて世界のロック史を塗り替えるパンク文化の中心地となっていく。 「ハリー・ポッター」シリーズのアラン・リックマンがヒリー・クリスタル役で主演を務め、「ウォッチメン」のマリン・アッカーマンがデボラ・ハリー役、「Smile スマイル」のカイル・ガルナーがルー・リード役、ロックバンド「フー・ファイターズ」のテイラー・ホーキンスがイギー・ポップ役、「フランシス・ハ」のミッキー・サムナーがパティ・スミス役で出演。監督は「ボトル・ドリーム カリフォルニアワインの奇跡」のランドール・ミラー。
A music biopic drama depicting the birth of CBGB, the legendary New York live house known as the birthplace of punk and new wave. 1970s, New York. Hilly Kristal, at rock bottom after a string of failed businesses and a divorce, opens a small country bar called "CBGB" to make a comeback. He builds the stage, wiring, and plumbing all by hand in DIY fashion, but customers never come, and the place stays empty day after day. Then one day, an unknown rock band called Television shows up, and Hilly lets them perform on the condition that they play only original songs. This becomes the catalyst for unknown young musicians like Talking Heads, Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Blondie to gather at the venue. The small bar begins to function as an experimental space where those who had lost a place for expression could find their own voice, and eventually becomes the epicenter of punk culture that would rewrite the history of rock worldwide. Alan Rickman of the "Harry Potter" series stars as Hilly Kristal, Malin Åkerman of "Watchmen" plays Deborah Harry, Kyle Gallner of "Smile" plays Lou Reed, Taylor Hawkins of the rock band Foo Fighters plays Iggy Pop, and Mickey Sumner of "Frances Ha" plays Patti Smith.
