「去年マリエンバートで」「ジャンヌ・ディエルマン ブリュッセル1080、コメルス河畔通り23番地」などで知られる女優デルフィーヌ・セイリグが1976年に発表した唯一の長編監督作で、ハリウッドとパリで活躍する23人の女優にインタビューしたドキュメンタリー。 セイリグが自らインタビュアーを務め、「もしあなたが男性だったとしても、この職業を選びましたか？」「他の女優と友好的な場面を演じたことがありますか？」という2つの質問を投げかける。「ジュリア」のジェーン・フォンダ、「アパートの鍵貸します」のシャーリー・マクレーン、「セリーヌとジュリーは舟でゆく」のジュリエット・ベルト、「中国女」のアンヌ・ビアゼムスキー、「ラストタンゴ・イン・パリ」のマリア・シュナイダーら、著名な映画女優からテレビドラマを中心に出演する女優、まだ無名の女優などさまざまな女性たちが、当時の男性中心の映画業界では答えることがリスクにもなり得るジェンダーについての質問に、率直に親密に、時にユーモラスに語る姿を映し出す。 原題の「Sois belle et tais-toi！」（美しくありなさい、そして黙っていなさい）は、もともとはフランスの映画・演劇界などで女性に対して使われていた表現と言われ、現在では英語圏でもジェンダー差別を象徴する言葉として使われる決まり文句。日本では2026年7月に制作50年を記念して劇場初公開。
The only feature-length directorial work by actress Delphine Seyrig, known for films like 'Last Year at Marienbad' and 'Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles', released in 1976. This documentary interviews 23 actresses active in Hollywood and Paris. Seyrig herself serves as the interviewer, asking two questions: 'If you were a man, would you still have chosen this profession?' and 'Have you ever played a friendly scene with another actress?' The film features a range of women—from famous film actresses like Jane Fonda ('Julia'), Shirley MacLaine ('The Apartment'), Juliet Berto ('Céline and Julie Go Boating'), Anne Wiazemsky ('La Chinoise'), and Maria Schneider ('Last Tango in Paris'), to TV actresses and unknowns—speaking frankly, intimately, and sometimes humorously about gender questions that were risky to answer in the male-dominated film industry of the time. The original title 'Sois belle et tais-toi!' (Be beautiful and shut up) is said to have been a phrase used against women in French film and theater, and is now a cliché symbolizing gender discrimination in English-speaking countries. In Japan, it will have its first theatrical release in July 2026 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its production.
