1980年代後半のアメリカ南部から生まれ、90年代のインディーシーンに独自のムーブメントを起こした謎多き音楽集団「エレファント6」の正体に迫った音楽ドキュメンタリー。 1980年代後半、ルイジアナ州ラストンに集まった高校時代の仲間たちは、自宅で手当たり次第の楽器を使った録音の「実験」を始めていた。サイケデリック音楽への愛を共有する彼らはやがてコロラド州デンバーやジョージア州アセンズへと移り住み、安アパートにアルミホイルを貼ってスタジオに仕立てるなど、DIYのこだわりを貫いていく。そこから「アップルズ・イン・ステレオ」「ニュートラル・ミルク・ホテル」「オリヴィア・トレマー・コントロール」といったバンドが生まれ、この3つのバンドが基盤となった「エレファント6」には、その後も多くのバンドが参加。友情で始まった彼らの活動は、当時主流だった音楽への反発心もあいまって支持を広げ、アメリカのミュージックシーンにかつてないムーブメントを巻き起こしていく。 「アップルズ・イン・ステレオ」のロバート・シュナイダーの友人でもあるチャド・ストックフレスが、約10年をかけて当事者やファンを取材。「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」のイライジャ・ウッド、「エターナル・サンシャイン」のデビッド・クロスらも証言者として登場する。日本では小山田圭吾やカヒミ・カリィとの交流から早くから一部のファンに知られていた幻のタイトルが、ライブ映像を追加したバージョンで2026年7月31日より公開される。
A music documentary that uncovers the truth behind the mysterious music collective 'Elephant 6,' born in the late 1980s American South and sparking a unique movement in the 90s indie scene. In the late 1980s, a group of high school friends in Ruston, Louisiana, began experimenting with home recordings using whatever instruments they could find. Sharing a love for psychedelic music, they eventually moved to Denver, Colorado, and Athens, Georgia, sticking to their DIY ethos by lining cheap apartments with aluminum foil to create studios. From this emerged bands like 'The Apples in Stereo,' 'Neutral Milk Hotel,' and 'Olivia Tremor Control,' which formed the core of 'Elephant 6,' later joined by many others. What started as a friendship-driven project, fueled by a rebellious spirit against the mainstream music of the time, grew in support and sparked an unprecedented movement in the American music scene. Director Chad Stockfress, a friend of Robert Schneider from 'The Apples in Stereo,' spent about ten years interviewing participants and fans. Elijah Wood (from 'The Lord of the Rings') and David Cross (from 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind') appear as commentators. This long-anticipated title, known early on to some Japanese fans through connections with Keigo Oyamada and Kahimi Karie, will be released in Japan on July 31, 2026, in a version with added live footage.
