Who exactly are the Elephant 6 collective, who kept creating music through DIY? Unraveling the behind-the-scenes story of a group that looked like a bunch of eccentrics but were purely and explosively creative—Elephant 6 was born in Ruston, Louisiana in the late 1980s. High school friends Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum, and Robert Schneider would gather at home and start "experimenting" with whatever instruments and equipment they could get their hands on. Influenced by psychedelic music and sharing a common sensibility, they moved to small college towns like Denver, Colorado, and Athens, Georgia, coinciding with the period when old 4-track and 8-track recording technology was becoming widely available. They continued to "experiment" further to create a new musical world, eventually giving birth to bands like The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Apples in Stereo. These three bands became the foundation of Elephant 6, and soon many more bands joined the collective. Directed by Chad Stockfleth, a friend of Robert Schneider, who kept filming for about ten years, this film was released in 2019 only through a rental-video system that required return, and could only be seen on VHS tapes—a legendary title that unravels the behind-the-scenes activities of numerous artists. In addition to interviews with those involved, Elijah Wood of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and David Cross of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) also appear, among a wide range of figures. They lived together in large, cheap-rent houses, sometimes lining rooms with aluminum foil to make studios, always committed to creating through DIY and recording. What began as friendship, combined with a backlash against the mainstream music of the time, gained support and sparked an unprecedented movement in the American music scene. What was the 90s really about, and how much was Elephant 6 loved? This is both a precious record of them and a message to future artists. In the US, an updated version with added live footage and more was released in November 2022 and generated buzz. In Japan, the collective drew attention from the start due to connections with Keigo Oyamada and Kahimi Karie, and now the long-awaited film that fans have been eagerly anticipating finally hits Japanese theaters! The poster visual and Japanese trailer have been unveiled. The poster features Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo, the pioneering and central band of Elephant 6, Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart of The Olivia Tremor Control, Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, along with many other unique bands and artists—the "friends" of the collective, including Of Montreal, Elf Power, and The Music Tapes.
