ビリー・ワイルダー初期の作品にして、フィルムノワールの傑作といわれるサスペンス映画。保険外交員のウォルターは、訪問先の人妻から夫に内緒で、彼に傷害保険をかけたいと相談される。ただならぬ様子に一旦は拒絶するが、美しい妻の魅力にとらわれ夫殺害の共犯者に堕ちてゆく。殺人シーンでは、現場に居合わせる人物の表情を長くとらえ、間接的なリアリズムを演出。2人を取り巻く脇のキャラクターも秀逸である。

An early work by Billy Wilder and a masterpiece of film noir suspense. Insurance salesman Walter is approached by a married woman who wants to take out an accident insurance policy on her husband without his knowledge. Sensing something amiss, he initially refuses, but captivated by the beautiful wife, he descends into becoming an accomplice in the husband's murder. The murder scene creates indirect realism by holding on the expressions of those present. The supporting characters surrounding the pair are also superb.
