Wyke, a famous mystery novelist, summons Tindle, a hairdresser and his wife's lover, to his home. Tindle expects to be confronted about the affair, but Wyke instead declares that he is "utterly exhausted by his spendthrift wife" and that "I too have a lovely mistress," and asks Tindle to disguise himself as a thief and steal the jewels kept in his home safe. Since the jewels are covered by theft insurance, he claims it would be mutually beneficial. Although it seemed too good to be true, Tindle, who is in financial difficulty, begins stealing the jewels following Wyke's script and his bizarre procedures.
