フランスの名匠クレール・ドゥニのキャリア初期の代表作のひとつで、南仏マルセイユを舞台に、若者たちの行き場のない孤独と言葉にならない親密さが交差していく様子を静かに描いたドラマ。登場人物たちの日常の断片の中に潜む感情の揺らぎを、説明を排した繊細な演出で丁寧にすくい取る。 港町マルセイユで暮らす19歳の青年ボニはピザ屋で働きながら、どこにも属さない日々を送っている。そんなある日、疎遠になっていた15歳の妹ネネットが突然現れ、ボニの部屋に転がり込む。ネネットは妊娠しており、行き場を失っていた。兄妹は互いに踏み込めない距離を保ったまま、ぎこちない同居生活を過ごす。ボニはパン屋の女性に心を寄せるが、その想いを現実に結びつけることができない。ネネットは自らの身体と向き合い、未来を選び取ろうとする。残酷な世界の中で、欲望と優しさは静かに関係を変えていく。 「ビフォア・ザ・レイン」のグレゴワール・コランがボニ役、長編映画初出演のアリス・ユーリがネネット役を務め、ビンセント・ギャロ、バレリア・ブルーニ・テデスキが共演。ドゥニ監督との長年の協働で知られるイギリスのロックバンド「Tindersticks」が音楽を手がけた。1996年のロカルノ国際映画祭で最高賞にあたる金豹賞を受賞。

In the port city of Marseille in southern France. Young Boni works at a pizzeria, spending his days belonging nowhere. One day, his long-estranged younger sister Nenette suddenly appears and crashes at his place. Having nowhere to go, Nenette carries a secret: she is pregnant. But she never reveals this fact to Boni. In their awkward cohabitation, the two spend time maintaining a distance they cannot cross. Boni develops feelings for a woman who works at a bakery, but cannot turn those feelings into reality. Nenette confronts her own body and tries to choose her future. In a cruel world, desire and tenderness quietly transform their relationship. Unspoken emotions slowly seep through.
