「精神の声」「エルミタージュ幻想」などで知られるロシアの鬼才アレクサンドル・ソクーロフ監督が、「モレク神」（ヒトラー）、「牡牛座」（スターリン）に次ぐ、20世紀の権力者を描く4部作の3作目として製作した問題作。神と崇められていた昭和天皇が、終戦を期に「人間宣言」するまでの心の葛藤を描く。昭和天皇にイッセー尾形、皇后に桃井かおり、侍従長に佐野史郎が扮している。

Russian visionary director Alexander Sokurov, known for *Spiritual Voices* and *Russian Ark*, presents this provocative film as the third installment in his tetralogy exploring 20th-century leaders, following *Moloch* (Hitler) and *Taurus* (Stalin). The film depicts the internal conflict of Emperor Showa, who was revered as a deity, leading up to his "Humanity Declaration" at the end of the war. Issey Ogata stars as the Emperor, alongside Kaori Momoi as the Empress and Shiro Sano as the Grand Chamberlain.
