バンド・デシネ作家でアニメーターのシルバン・ショメによる長編初監督作品で、誘拐された孫の救出のため奔走する祖母の姿をユーモアたっぷりに描いたアニメーション映画。セリフを極力排し、ジャズをはじめとした軽快な音楽にのせてデフォルメされたキャラクターが織りなす冒険を描き、フランス映画として初めてアカデミー長編アニメーション部門にノミネートされるなど世界的に高い評価を受けた一作。内気で孤独な孫のシャンピオンが、自転車に興味を持っていることを知ったおばあちゃん。シャンピオンは自転車選手になるため、おばあちゃんと二人三脚で特訓に励み、ついに世界最高峰の自転車レース「ツール・ド・フランス」に出場するまでに成長する。ところがレースの途中に事件が起こり、シャンピオンが何者かに誘拐されてしまう。おばあちゃんは誘拐された孫を助けるため、愛犬ブルーノとともに冒険に出る。伝説の三つ子ミュージシャンの老婆たちの協力と、これまでに培った人生経験や知恵やユーモアを武器に、数々の難局を潜り抜けていく。アカデミー賞では長編アニメーション賞のほか、主題歌賞にもノミネートされた。日本ではスタジオジブリの高畑勲らが称賛、2004年に劇場初公開された。2021年には、製作20周年を前にしたプレアニバーサリー企画としてリバイバル公開される。

The feature directorial debut of bande dessinée artist and animator Sylvain Chomet, this animated film humorously depicts a grandmother's desperate quest to rescue her kidnapped grandson. Minimizing dialogue and featuring stylized characters on a jaunty jazz-infused soundtrack, this adventure earned high international acclaim, becoming the first French film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The grandmother learns that her shy, lonely grandson, Champion, is interested in bicycles. To help him become a cyclist, the grandmother trains with him, and he eventually grows up to compete in the world's greatest bicycle race, the Tour de France. However, during the race, Champion is kidnapped by mysterious figures. The grandmother sets off on an adventure with her loyal dog Bruno to rescue her kidnapped grandson. With the help of three legendary triplet musician old ladies, and armed with her life experience, wisdom, and humor, she overcomes numerous obstacles. Besides Best Animated Feature, the film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In Japan, it was praised by Isao Takahata of Studio Ghibli and was first released in theaters in 2004. A revival screening was held in 2021 as a pre-20th anniversary project.
