The life of Johann Sebastian Bach as seen through the eyes of his second wife, Anna Magdalena Bach. Directed and written by the duo Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, with cinematography by Ugo Piccone, Saverio Diamante, and Giovanni Canfarelli, and music by Leo Leonius. Starring Gustav Leonhardt and Christiane Lang-Drewanz. The film is composed of just over one hundred shots. Only the musicians performing appear on screen, while Anna Magdalena's (Christiane Lang-Drewanz) narration recounts Bach's (Gustav Leonhardt) life from age 35 until his death. The Bach works performed on screen include the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 BWV 1050, 1st movement Allegro; Prelude No. 8 BWV 854 from the Clavier-Büchlein for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach; Minuet from French Suite No. 1 BWV 812; Viola da Gamba Sonata No. 2 BWV 1028, 1st movement Adagio; Organ Trio No. 2 BWV 526, 2nd movement Largo; Magnificat BWV 243, movements 11 and 12; Tempo di Gavotta from Partita No. 6 BWV 830; Cantata BWV 205 "Zerreißet, zersprenget, zertrümmert die Gruft," movements 2 and 3 (Bass Recitative and Aria); Cantata BWV 198 "Trauer-Ode," final chorus; Funeral Music for Prince Leopold BWV 244a, Soprano Aria; St. Matthew Passion BWV 244, opening chorus; Cantata BWV 42 "Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats," opening Sinfonia and Tenor Recitative; and 24 other pieces. In 1722, Anna Magdalena is taken in as Bach's second wife. Over the 29 years until her death in 1756, Bach's creative struggles and his attitude towards Anna and their children at home are narrated in the order the music was composed.
