妻子のためにヤクザ稼業から足を洗った男が堅気の世界で奮闘するも苛立ちを募らせていく姿を描き、自主制作作品ながら大ヒットを記録した異色のヤクザ映画。小劇場でキャリアを積んだ金子正次が自ら執筆した脚本をもとに映画初主演を務めたが、金子は本作公開直後に33歳の若さで他界し、本作が唯一の主演映画となった。 新宿・歌舞伎町界隈を縄張りとする三東会幹部の竜二は、アパートの一室に開いた闇のルーレット場を2人の舎弟に仕切らせ、順風満帆な日々を送っていた。そんなある日、金と出世欲だけで動くヤクザの世界に疎ましさを感じた彼は、妻まり子と幼い娘あやと一緒に暮らすため堅気になることを決意。裏社会から足を洗って酒屋で働きはじめた竜二は、平凡で慎ましい家族との生活に心の安らぎを覚えるが……。 監督は金子の学生時代からの友人で本作が長編劇映画初監督となる川島透。2023年10月、公開40周年を記念して作成されたDCP版でリバイバル公開。2026年10月、4Kスキャン2Kリマスター版で公開。
An unconventional yakuza film that depicts a man who quits the yakuza life for the sake of his wife and child, struggling in the straight world while his frustration builds—and which became a major hit despite being an independent production. Masatsugu Kaneko, who built his career in small theaters, wrote the screenplay himself and starred in his first film role, but Kaneko passed away at the young age of 33 shortly after the film's release, making this his only starring film. Ryuji, an executive of the Santo-kai yakuza group controlling the Kabukicho area of Shinjuku, runs an underground roulette parlor in a room of an apartment building through two of his underlings and enjoys smooth-sailing days. One day, feeling disgusted with the yakuza world that runs on money and ambition alone, he resolves to go straight so he can live with his wife Mariko and young daughter Aya. Ryuji leaves the underworld and begins working at a liquor store, finding peace of mind in an ordinary, modest life with his family—but then... The director is Toru Kawashima, a friend of Kaneko since their student days, making his feature film directorial debut. In October 2023, a DCP version created to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its release was given a revival screening. In October 2026, a 4K scan 2K remastered version will be released.
