A director's cut, completed in 2007 through re-editing, of Charles Burnett's second feature film from 1983. Burnett, an influential figure in American independent cinema who consistently depicts the daily lives and humanity of African Americans, presents a tragicomedy of a working-class young man torn between family, friendship, and identity. It quietly reveals class differences within the Black community, psychological gaps between generations, and the frustration of young people left behind by social success, all from the gaps in everyday life. Pierce, a 30-year-old helping his parents run their dry-cleaning shop, drifts aimlessly through his days with no clear future. His childhood friends are either in prison or already dead. When his brother, a lawyer, marries a woman from a wealthy family, Pierce's discomfort and feelings of inferiority grow. Around this time, Pierce reunites with his best friend Soldier, just released from prison, and finds himself caught between his sense of duty to his family and his loyalty to his friend, forced to make a choice. In Japan, this 4K restored version will have its theatrical premiere at the special screening series 'Charles Burnett: Everyday Blues' (from February 7, 2026, at Theater Image Forum).
