Myanmar Diaries

Myanmar, a country in Southeast Asia. Over the past decade of continued change toward democratization, citizens had begun to hold hope for freedom and development. However, on February 1, 2021, the military once again seized control of the country, and large-scale protest demonstrations by an outraged populace erupted across the nation. People raised three fingers as a symbol of resistance and voiced their opposition to military rule, but beginning with the death of one young girl, the military's crackdown intensified, and people's freedom and peaceful lives crumbled away... With the internet periodically shut down and media outlets and social media posts disseminating information unfavorable to the military subject to punishment, making it difficult to convey the situation domestically and internationally, young Myanmar filmmakers formed the 'Myanmar Film Collective' while maintaining their anonymity. Seamlessly connecting short films by ten directors born from their respective daily lives with recorded footage posted on social media by ordinary citizens, they weave together urgent 'first-person narratives' of life under oppression.
