溝口の国際的評価を受けて海外輸出を視野に入れ、香港のショウ･ブラザーズとの合作によって製作された溝口初のカラー作品。大映が意欲的に研究に取り組んでいたイーストマンカラーによって撮影された。史実の映像化ではなく、京マチ子演じる楊貴妃を政治的野心の犠牲になった悲劇的な女性として描いたメロドラマとなっている。Produced with an eye toward international distribution in light of Mizoguchi’s growing global reputation,Yang Kwei Fei—a co-production with Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers—was the director’s first color film. It was shot using Eastmancolor, a process that Daiei had been actively researching at the time. More melodrama than accurate historical reconstruction, the film portrays Yang Kwei-Fei (Machiko Kyo) as a tragic heroine who falls prey to the political ambitions of her opportunistic family.
A commentary: Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, grieving the loss of his beloved consort, sets his sights on a young woman... Mizoguchi's first color film, a co-production with Hong Kong, is a courtly tapestry portraying the love and tragic fate of Yang Guifei, the beauty who toppled an empire. The restrained color palette that highlights the exotic costumes and art direction is striking.
