「ノマドランド」のクロエ・ジャオ監督が、シェイクスピアの名作戯曲「ハムレット」の誕生の背景にあった悲劇と愛の物語を、フィクションを交えながら描いたドラマ。北アイルランドの作家マギー・オファーレルが2020年に発表し、英女性小説賞と全米批評家協会賞を受賞した同名小説を映画化した。 16世紀イングランドの小さな村。薬草の知識を持ち不思議な力を宿したアグネス・シェイクスピアは、作家としてロンドンで活動する夫ウィリアムが不在のため、3人の子どもたちと暮らしている。ペスト禍のなかで子どもたちを守り奮闘するアグネスだったが、不運にも11歳の息子ハムネットが命を落とし、家族は深い悲しみに包まれる。 「ウーマン・トーキング　私たちの選択」のジェシー・バックリーがアグネス、「aftersun アフターサン」のポール・メスカルがウィリアムを演じ、「奇跡の海」のエミリー・ワトソン、「ブルータリスト」のジョー・アルウィンが共演。スティーブン・スピルバーグとサム・メンデスが製作に名を連ねた。第98回アカデミー賞では作品賞ほか計8部門にノミネートされ、ジェシー・バックリーが主演女優賞を受賞した。

A drama by Chloé Zhao, director of "Nomadland," that blends fiction with the tragic love story behind the creation of Shakespeare's classic play "Hamlet." Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Northern Irish author Maggie O'Farrell, which won the Women's Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award. In a small 16th-century English village, Agnes Shakespeare, who possesses knowledge of herbs and mysterious powers, lives with her three children while her husband William works as a writer in London. Agnes struggles to protect her children during a plague outbreak, but tragedy strikes when her 11-year-old son Hamnet dies, plunging the family into deep grief. Jessie Buckley ("Women Talking") plays Agnes, and Paul Mescal ("Aftersun") plays William, with Emily Watson ("Breaking the Waves") and Joe Alwyn ("The Brutalist") co-starring. Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes are among the producers. Nominated for eight Academy Awards at the 98th ceremony, including Best Picture, Jessie Buckley won the Best Actress award.
