東映動画が初めて日本や中国といった従来の舞台を離れて描いたのは、若き船乗りのロマンあふれる航海。船医の経験もあり、芥川賞受賞から間もない北杜夫と手塚治虫という異色のタッグが脚本を務めた。時に動画1枚に300もの水玉を描くほどスタッフは波の表現に尽力し、1万枚を越える作画が生み出す波は、海洋アドベンチャーならではの臨場感を湛えている。

Toei Animation's first departure from traditional Japanese or Chinese settings follows a young sailor's romantic voyage. The screenplay was an unusual collaboration between Morio Kita, a recent Akutagawa Prize winner with experience as a ship's doctor, and Osamu Tezuka. Staff went to great lengths to depict waves, sometimes painting as many as 300 polka dots on a single cel, and the resulting animation—over 10,000 drawings—imbues the ocean adventure with remarkable realism.
