Hikoroku Laughs a lot
In a corner of Shinjuku nearly emptied of people due to redevelopment, Hikoroku (Tokugawa) stands firm and refuses to leave a commercial building slated for demolition. The agendas of his family, mistress, and the tenants downstairs all intersect, and when a land broker's harassment escalates into a riot, his missing son Hikoichi (Maruyama) returns—but... The contrast between the sense of liberation at dawn and the magnificent nighttime interior set by art director Kazuo Kubo is also a highlight. The perspective of observing people living on the margins of society and their communal way of life—which would later come to fruition in Karayuki-san—is equally striking in this work.
