The sixth feature-length anime from Toei Animation, this adventure fantasy humorously explores Japanese mythology. In the age of the gods long ago, Prince Susanoo, born to Izanagi and Izanami, enjoys happy days on Onogoro Island. One day, his mother Izanami dies. Unable to accept her death, Susanoo sets out with a rabbit named Akahana on a journey to Yomi-no-Kuni, the land of the dead where his mother is said to be. After adventures in the Night Land ruled by his brother Tsukuyomi and Takamagahara ruled by his sister Amaterasu, Susanoo arrives in Izumo Province. There, to save the princess Kushinada, he decides to fight the Yamata-no-Orochi. This was the directorial debut of Yugo Serikawa, later known for the 'Cyborg 009' series, with original animation direction by Koji Mori. The Orochi battle scene, which took Yasuo Otsuka and Sadao Tsukioka six months to complete, is celebrated as one of the greatest moments in Japanese animation history. The music was composed by Akira Ifukube, known for 'Godzilla'.
