香港の名匠ウォン・カーウァイが監督・脚本を手がけ、トニー・レオン、木村拓哉、チャン・ツィイーらアジアの人気スターが共演したSFラブストーリー。 「欲望の翼」「花様年華」に続いて1960年代を舞台にした作品で、両作品のエピソードを散りばめながら描く。1967年、激動期の香港。かつて愛した人を忘れられず、女たちと刹那的な関係を繰り返す作家チャウは、滞在先のホテルで近未来SF小説「2046」の執筆に取りかかる。小説の登場人物たちはアンドロイドが客室乗務員を務める列車に乗り込み、そこへ行けば失われた愛を見つけることができるという「2046」を目指す。チャウは小説に自らの日常を反映させ、主人公の男に自分自身を投影しながら執筆を進めていく。 2005年・第24回香港電影金像奨で最優秀主演男優賞（トニー・レオン）と最優秀主演女優賞（チャン・ツィイー）、ニューヨーク映画批評家協会賞で外国語映画賞を受賞。2022年には4Kレストア版が「WKW4K ウォン・カーウァイ4K」（22年8月19日～シネマート新宿、グランドシネマサンシャイン、シネマシティほか）で上映。

A sci-fi love story written and directed by Hong Kong master Wong Kar-wai, starring Asian superstars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Zhang Ziyi. Set in the 1960s, following "Days of Being Wild" and "In the Mood for Love," it weaves in episodes from those films. In 1967, during Hong Kong's turbulent era, writer Chow, unable to forget a past love and engaging in fleeting relationships with women, begins writing a near-future sci-fi novel titled "2046" at his hotel. The novel's characters board a train where androids serve as stewardesses, heading toward "2046," a place where lost love can be found. Chow reflects his own daily life in the novel, projecting himself onto the male protagonist as he writes. It won Best Actor (Tony Leung) and Best Actress (Zhang Ziyi) at the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2005, and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2022, a 4K restored version was screened as part of "WKW4K" at theaters including Cinemart Shinjuku, Grand Cinema Sunshine, and Cinema City.
