「欲望の翼」「ブエノスアイレス」のウォン・カーウァイ監督がトニー・レオンとマギー・チャンを主演に迎え、それぞれ家庭を持つ男女の不倫の愛を描いた恋愛ドラマ。 1962年、香港。新聞編集者の男性チャウと商社で秘書として働く女性チャンは、同じ日に同じアパートに引っ越してきて隣人になる。やがて2人は互いのパートナーが不倫関係にあることに気づき、時間を共有するように。戸惑いながらも、強く惹かれ合っていくチャウとチャンだったが……。 設定の一部や世界観は「欲望の翼」から引き継がれており、さらに2004年製作の「2046」へとつながっていく。第53回カンヌ国際映画祭で最優秀男優賞とフランス映画高等技術委員会賞を受賞した。 日本では2001年に劇場公開。2018年2月には、カーウァイ監督の｢欲望の翼｣デジタルリマスター版の公開にあわせて、Bunkamuraル・シネマで特別上映。2022年8月には、4Kレストア版が「WKW4K ウォン・カーウァイ4K」で上映。2026年5月には「花様年華 25周年特別版」と題し、短編「花様年華2021」と同時上映でリバイバル公開。

A romantic drama directed by Wong Kar-wai of 'Days of Being Wild' and 'Happy Together,' starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, depicting the adulterous love between a married man and woman. Hong Kong, 1962. Chow, a newspaper editor, and Chan, a secretary at a trading company, move into the same apartment building on the same day and become neighbors. They soon discover their respective spouses are having an affair and begin spending time together. Hesitant yet strongly drawn to each other, Chow and Chan... Some settings and the worldview are carried over from 'Days of Being Wild,' and the story connects to the 2004 film '2046.' It won the Best Actor award and the Technical Grand Prize at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival. Released in Japanese theaters in 2001. In February 2018, it had a special screening at Bunkamura Le Cinéma alongside the digital remastered release of Wong Kar-wai's 'Days of Being Wild.' In August 2022, the 4K restored version was screened as part of 'WKW4K: Wong Kar-wai 4K.' In May 2026, a revival release titled 'In the Mood for Love 25th Anniversary Special Edition' is scheduled, screened simultaneously with the short film 'In the Mood for Love 2021.'
