作家スティーブン・キングが2020年に発表した短編小説「チャックの数奇な人生　イフ・イット・ブリーズ」を、「ドクター・スリープ」のマイク・フラナガン監督が映画化したヒューマンミステリー。 大規模な自然災害と人災が次々と地球を襲い、世界は終わりを迎えつつあった。インターネットもSNSもつながらないなか、街頭やテレビ、ラジオに突如として、「チャールズ・クランツに感謝します。素晴らしい39年間に、ありがとう、チャック」という謎の広告が大量に現れる。高校教師マーティーが元妻フェリシアに会うため家を飛び出すと、誰もいない街はチャックの広告で埋め尽くされていた。無事に出会えたマーティーとフェリシアが星々を眺めながら終末の到来を感じ、手を握り合っていると、場面は一転して広告の人物・チャックの視点に切り替わり、彼の人生をさかのぼる物語が美しい映像で紡がれていく。 「アベンジャーズ」シリーズのトム・ヒドルストンが主人公チャックを演じ、「それでも夜は明ける」のキウェテル・イジョフォー、「ガーディアンズ・オブ・ギャラクシー」シリーズのカレン・ギラン、「ワンダー　君は太陽」のジェイコブ・トレンブレイ、「スター・ウォーズ」シリーズのマーク・ハミルが共演。「ラ・ラ・ランド」の振付師マンディ・ムーアがダンスシーンの振り付けを担当。2024年・第49回トロント国際映画祭で最高賞にあたる観客賞を受賞。

A human mystery film adaptation of Stephen King's 2020 short story "The Life of Chuck," directed by Mike Flanagan of "Doctor Sleep." As massive natural and man-made disasters strike the Earth one after another, the world is nearing its end. With no internet or social media, mysterious advertisements suddenly appear everywhere on street signs, TVs, and radios, reading: "Thanks to Charles Krantz. For 39 great years, thanks, Chuck." When high school teacher Marty rushes out of his house to see his ex-wife Felicia, the deserted city is filled with Chuck's ads. As Marty and Felicia, who have safely reunited, gaze at the stars, feeling the apocalypse approaching, and hold hands, the scene shifts to the perspective of the man in the ads, Chuck, and a story tracing his life unfolds through beautiful imagery. Tom Hiddleston of the "Avengers" series plays the protagonist Chuck, with Chiwetel Ejiofor of "12 Years a Slave," Karen Gillan of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series, Jacob Tremblay of "Wonder," and Mark Hamill of the "Star Wars" series co-starring. Mandy Moore, choreographer of "La La Land," choreographs the dance scenes. It won the Audience Award, the top prize, at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
