岩井俊二監督が「Love Letter」に続いて手がけた長編第2作。架空の無国籍都市・円都で暮らす移民たちの物語を、独自の世界観で描き出す。 「円」が世界で一番強かった頃。日本にやって来た移民たちが街を「円都（イェンタウン）」と呼ぶ一方で、日本人はこの名前を忌み嫌い、移民たちを「円盗（イェンタウン）」と呼んで蔑んだ。母親を亡くした少女は、胸にアゲハ蝶のタトゥーを入れた娼婦グリコに引き取られ、アゲハと名付けられる。グリコは歌手を夢見て上海からやって来た「円盗」だった。アゲハはグリコの紹介で、彼女の恋人フェイホンや謎の男ランと出会い、ランが営むなんでも屋で働きはじめる。ある日、アゲハはグリコの客・須藤に襲われたところを元ボクサーのアーロウに助けられ、死んでしまった須藤の腹から1本のカセットテープを見つける。同じ頃、中国系マフィアのボスであるリャンキが、須藤とカセットテープの行方を追っていた。 小林武史が音楽を手がけ、劇中でChara演じるグリコがボーカルを務めるバンド「YEN TOWN BAND」の楽曲が実際にリリースされ大ヒットを記録。少女アゲハを伊藤歩、フェイホンを三上博史、リャンキを江口洋介が演じた。1996年の公開から30周年となる2026年、岩井俊二監修のもと4Kリマスター・Dolby Atoms化されてリバイバル公開。

The second feature film directed by Shunji Iwai, following "Love Letter." It depicts the stories of immigrants living in the fictional stateless city of "Yentown" through his unique worldview. At a time when the yen was the strongest currency in the world, immigrants who came to Japan called the city "Yentown," while the Japanese despised the name and scornfully called the immigrants "Yentown" (thieves). A girl who lost her mother is taken in by Glico, a prostitute with a swallowtail butterfly tattoo on her chest, and is named Ageha. Glico is a "Yentown" who came from Shanghai dreaming of becoming a singer. Through Glico, Ageha meets her lover Feihong and a mysterious man named Ran, and begins working at Ran's odd-jobs shop. One day, Ageha is attacked by Glico's client Sutou but is saved by a former boxer named Arlow, and finds a cassette tape in the belly of the dead Sutou. Around the same time, Liangqi, a Chinese mafia boss, is searching for Sutou and the cassette tape. Music was handled by Takeshi Kobayashi, and the band "YEN TOWN BAND," with Chara performing as Glico on vocals, actually released songs from the film and became a huge hit. Ito Aoi plays the girl Ageha, Mikami Hiroshi plays Feihong, and Eguchi Yosuke plays Liangqi. In 2026, marking the 30th anniversary since its 1996 release, a 4K remastered and Dolby Atmos version was revived in theaters under the supervision of Shunji Iwai.
