星座の鎧をまとった「聖闘士」たちが女神アテナのために闘う。荒木伸吾と姫野美智のデザインによる美しく誇張の効いた身体に加え、透過光などの豪華な画面効果を伴う必殺技、スピード感のあるアクションと情感の演出、劇伴のオーケストラなどで、1980年代のアクションアニメの代表的作品となった。劇場版1作目はTVのシリーズディレクター森下孝三が監督し、邪神エリスの復活を描いた。

Warriors clad in constellational armor, the 'Saints,' fight for the goddess Athena. With beautifully exaggerated bodies designed by Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, special moves accompanied by lavish screen effects like transmitted light, fast-paced action, emotional direction, and an orchestral score, it became a representative action anime of the 1980s. The first theatrical film was directed by TV series director Toshio Morishita and depicts the resurrection of the evil god Eris.
