Petite Maman
Directed and written by Céline Sciamma of "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," this film weaves a story of loss and healing connecting three generations: daughter, mother, and grandmother. Eight-year-old Nelly, grieving her beloved grandmother, is taken by her parents to clean out the forest house where her grandmother lived. But her mother, who spent her own childhood there, is overwhelmed by memories at every turn and eventually leaves. Left behind, Nelly wanders the woods and meets another eight-year-old girl who calls herself Marion—the same name as Nelly's mother. The girl invites Nelly to her home, which turns out to be "grandma's house." Sisters Joséphine and Gabrielle Sanz, making their film debut, play Nelly and Marion. Nina Meurisse ("A Woman's Life") and Margot Abascal ("Sagan") co-star. The film was presented in the competition section of the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in 2021.
