乗り込み型巨大ロボットを主役としたTVアニメ「マジンガーZ」の劇場版。監督の西沢信孝は主人公の悩みや痛みをロボットに託してドラマを盛り上げ、無敵のマジンガーZがボロボロになって戦う姿を描いている。TVに先駆けて後継のグレートマジンガーが登場したことも子供たちを驚かせた。「マジンガーZ」は玩具などの版権収入が好調で、以後、企画時からマーチャンダイズを織り込んだ作品が広がるきっかけとなった。

A theatrical version of the TV anime "Mazinger Z," featuring a piloted giant robot as the protagonist. Director Nobutaka Nishizawa heightened the drama by entrusting the robot with the protagonist's worries and pain, depicting the invincible Mazinger Z fighting while battered and broken. The surprise appearance of the successor Great Mazinger, ahead of the TV series, astonished children. "Mazinger Z" achieved strong revenue from merchandise licensing, sparking a trend of incorporating merchandising into projects from the planning stage onward.
