Sisters of the Gion

Set in Kyoto’s Gion district, this realist masterpiece portrays two geisha sisters with opposing views of the world—dutiful Umekichi (Yoko Umemura), who remains faithful to feudal society values, and her younger sister Omocha (Isuzu Yamada), who strives to forge an independent life—to deliver a penetrating critique of the patriarchal social order that governs their lives. Determined to create characters deeply rooted in the culture and speech of Kyoto, Mizoguchi once again collaborated with screenwriter Yoshikata Yoda, a Kyoto native with whom he had first worked onOsaka Elegy. Their partnership would go on to become one of the most celebrated director–screenwriter collaborations in Japanese cinema.

A commentary: A masterpiece that gazes with a penetrating eye at two contrasting geisha sisters living in Kyoto's Gion pleasure district. The older sister, old-fashioned and easily swayed by emotion, and the younger sister, modern and pragmatic... You can't take your eyes off the 19-year-old Yamada, who plays the younger sister rebelling against her submissive elder sibling and trying to toy with men, exuding a remarkable presence.
