1980年代イギリスの炭鉱町を舞台に、バレエダンサーを目指す少年の奮闘と家族の絆を描いた青春ドラマ。 1984年、イングランド北東部の炭鉱町。母を亡くした11歳の少年ビリーは、炭鉱労働者の父の命令でボクシング教室に通わされている。ある日、偶然目にしたバレエ教室のレッスンに興味を抱いた彼は、女の子たちに混じってレッスンに参加するように。バレエの先生ウィルキンソンはビリーにダンサーとしての才能を見いだし、彼女の熱心な指導のもとでビリーはめきめきと上達していくが……。 オーディションで2000人を超える候補者の中から選ばれたジェイミー・ベルが主人公ビリーを熱演。「リタと大学教授」のジュリー・ウォルターズがウィルキンソン先生を演じ、アカデミー助演女優賞にノミネートされた。「マイ・ネーム・イズ・ジョー」のゲイリー・ルイスがビリーの父を演じた。世界的バレエダンサーのアダム・クーパーが特別出演。後に「めぐりあう時間たち」などを手がける舞台演出家出身のスティーブン・ダルドリー監督が長編映画初メガホンをとった。

A coming-of-age drama set in a 1980s British mining town, following a boy's struggle to become a ballet dancer and the bonds of family. In 1984, in a mining town in northeast England, 11-year-old Billy, who has lost his mother, is forced by his coal miner father to attend boxing classes. One day, intrigued by a ballet class he stumbles upon, he joins the girls in their lessons. Ballet teacher Mrs. Wilkinson discovers Billy's talent as a dancer, and under her passionate guidance, he improves rapidly. Jamie Bell, chosen from over 2,000 auditionees, delivers a powerful performance as Billy. Julie Walters of "Educating Rita" plays Mrs. Wilkinson, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Gary Lewis of "My Name Is Joe" plays Billy's father. World-renowned ballet dancer Adam Cooper makes a special appearance. The film marks the feature directorial debut of stage director Stephen Daldry, who later helmed "The Hours."
