1929 Shanghai. Ruan Lingyu, a young actress who has just made her debut, is chosen for the lead role in the film 'Spring Dream of an Old Capital' and quickly gains popularity through her natural beauty and acting talent. Meanwhile, in her private life she becomes deeply involved with Zhang Damin, the son of a wealthy family, but his parents refuse to approve their marriage. The married industrialist Tang Jishan comforts the troubled Ruan, but Zhang, who had been extorting money from her, sells the story of their relationship to a newspaper, and it is reported as a scandal. Maggie Cheung embodies Ruan with her entire being, winning the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
