「別離」「セールスマン」でアカデミー外国語映画賞を2度受賞するなど世界的に高い評価を受けるイランの名匠アスガー・ファルハディーが手がけ、2021年・第74回カンヌ国際映画祭でグランプリを受賞したヒューマンサスペンス。SNSやメディアの歪んだ正義と不条理によって、人生を根底から揺るがす事態に巻き込まれていく男の姿を描く。イランの古都シラーズ。ラヒムは借金の罪で投獄され、服役している。そんなある時、婚約者が偶然17枚の金貨を拾う。借金を返済すればその日にでも出所できるラヒムにとって、それはまさに神からの贈り物のように思えた。しかし、罪悪感にさいなまれたラヒムは、金貨を落とし主に返すことを決意する。そのささやかな善行がメディアに報じられると大きな反響を呼び、ラヒムは「正直者の囚人」という美談とともに祭り上げられていく。ところが、 SNSを介して広まったある噂をきっかけに、状況は一変。罪のない吃音症の幼い息子をも巻き込んだ、大きな事件へと発展していく。

A human suspense film by renowned Iranian master Asghar Farhadi, who has received high international acclaim including two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film for "A Separation" and "The Salesman," and which won the Grand Prix at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021. It depicts a man whose life is fundamentally shaken by the distorted justice of social media and the media, and by absurdity. In Shiraz, the ancient city of Iran, Rahim is imprisoned for debt. One day, his fiancée happens to find 17 gold coins. For Rahim, who could be released the very day he repays his debt, it seems like a gift from God. However, tormented by guilt, Rahim decides to return the coins to their owner. When this small act of kindness is reported by the media, it causes a huge stir, and Rahim is elevated as a heartwarming story of an "honest prisoner." But then, triggered by a rumor spread via social media, the situation takes a drastic turn. It escalates into a major incident that even involves his innocent young son who stutters.
