「オールド・ボーイ」でカンヌ国際映画祭グランプリ、「別れる決心」で同映画祭監督賞を受賞した韓国の名匠パク・チャヌクが、突然の解雇で人生が一変するサラリーマンの姿を、アイロニーとブラックユーモアを交えて描いたサスペンスドラマ。パク監督が出世作「JSA」でタッグを組んだイ・ビョンホンを、21年ぶりに主演に迎えた。 製紙会社に勤めるごく普通のサラリーマンのマンスは、妻と2人の子ども、2匹の飼い犬と暮らし、すべてに満ち足りていると思っていた。しかしある時、25年勤めた会社から突然解雇されたことで事態は一変。1年以上続く就職活動は難航し、愛着ある自宅も手放さざるを得ない状況に陥ってしまう。追い詰められたマンスは成長著しい製紙会社に飛び込みで履歴書を持ち込むも、そこでも無下に断られてしまう。自分こそがその会社に最もふさわしい人材だと確信するマンスは、ある決断を下す。それは、人員に空きがないなら自分で作るしかないというものだった。 原作は、コスタ＝ガブラスも映画化したドナルド・E・ウェストレイクの小説「斧」。追い詰められていくマンスをイ・ビョンホンが演じ、危機に直面するほど強さを増す妻ミリを「愛の不時着」のソン・イェジンが演じた。2025年・第82回ベネチア国際映画祭コンペティション部門出品。第50回トロント国際映画祭では、新設の「国際観客賞」（北米以外の作品が対象の観客賞）を受賞した。

Korean master filmmaker Park Chan-wook, winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes for "Oldboy" and Best Director for "Decision to Leave," directs this suspense drama laced with irony and black humor about a salaryman whose life is turned upside down by a sudden layoff. Park reunites with Lee Byung-hun, who starred in his breakthrough film "Joint Security Area," for the first time in 21 years. Man-su, an ordinary salaryman at a paper company, lives with his wife, two children, and two dogs, believing he has everything he could want. But his life changes drastically when he is suddenly fired from the company he has worked for for 25 years. His job search drags on for over a year, and he is forced to sell his beloved home. Desperate, Man-su walks into a rapidly growing paper company with his resume, only to be flatly rejected. Convinced he is the most qualified person for the company, he makes a decision: if there's no opening, he'll have to create one himself. The film is based on the novel "The Ax" by Donald E. Westlake, which was also adapted into a film by Costa-Gavras. Lee Byung-hun plays the increasingly cornered Man-su, and Son Ye-jin of "Crash Landing on You" plays his wife Mi-ri, who grows stronger as the crisis deepens. The film was selected for the competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025 and won the newly established International Audience Award (for non-North American films) at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival.
