フランスの鬼才レオス・カラックスが1983年に発表した長編デビュー作。夜のパリをさまようふたつの孤独な魂の出会いを美しいモノクロ映像で描き、第37回カンヌ国際映画祭でヤング大賞を受賞するなど世界各地の映画祭で話題を集めた。 親友に恋人を奪われた青年アレックスは、恋人とケンカした女性ミレーユと運命的な出会いを果たす。アレックスはミレーユに一目ぼれするが、やがてふたりは思わぬ悲劇に見舞われる。 アレックス役とミレーユ役には、当時新人俳優だったドニ・ラバンとミレーユ・ペリエをそれぞれ抜てき。ラバン演じる主人公アレックスは、後に形を変えながら「汚れた血」「ポンヌフの恋人」の主人公となり、本作とあわせて「アレックス3部作」と呼ばれるようになった。ジャン＝イブ・エスコフィエが撮影を手がけ、続く2作品でも撮影を担当。日本では、1988年2月公開の「汚れた血」に続いて同年7月に劇場初公開された。2026年1月、4Kレストア版にてリバイバル公開。

The feature debut of French maverick Leos Carax, released in 1983. It depicts the encounter of two lonely souls wandering through the Paris night in beautiful black-and-white imagery, winning the Youth Prize at the 37th Cannes Film Festival and generating buzz at festivals worldwide. Alex, a young man whose best friend stole his girlfriend, has a fateful encounter with Mireille, a woman who just fought with her lover. Alex falls in love with Mireille at first sight, but they soon meet with an unexpected tragedy. The roles of Alex and Mireille were played by then-newcomers Denis Lavant and Mireille Perrier. The protagonist Alex, played by Lavant, later reappeared in transformed forms in 'Bad Blood' and 'The Lovers on the Bridge', forming what is known as the 'Alex Trilogy' along with this film. Jean-Yves Escoffier handled the cinematography and continued as cinematographer for the subsequent two films. In Japan, it was first theatrically released in July 1988, following the release of 'Bad Blood' in February of the same year. A 4K restored version was re-released in January 2026.
